No matter how many blogs I start, introduction posts always feel awkward.
Some of you may have visited me here before. I originally started the blog at the beginning of 2019, with the intent of it being a lifestyle blog and place where I could focus on my world as a plus-sized woman. After a month or so I just wasn’t feeling it when it came to the content I was creating. So, I took a long hiatus before deciding I wanted to reboot with a new focus. While there will certainly be some lifestyle elements that show up here and there (product reviews/recs, recipes, etc.), MGW is now going to be a personal blog where I catalog and share my health and wellness journey and what’s going on in my life.
I’m Nikki. I’m 36 and a native to Minneapolis, MN. I currently live in the suburbs of the Twin Cities. My day job is in social services, where I work in upper management and am involved in advocacy efforts at the state and federal level. When I’m not working you can find me blogging (here or on my book blog, Confessions of a Wordaholic), writing, reading, spinning, or spending time with my crew (when we’re not under stay home orders, of course).
Writing and music are two of my biggest passions. I’ve been crafting stories since I was a child and dream of becoming a published author someday. Much of the inspiration for my writing comes from music. I listen to all different kinds, but my favorite genres are 90s alternative and 90s country. Butch Walker is my favorite musician. He saved my life with his music (a story I’ll share in a future blog post) and, 22 years later, I’m just as in love with his tunes as I was when I first heard them. Some of my other favorites include Alice in Chains, Disturbed, Stone Temple Pilots, Halsey, Pearl Jam, Bush, and Live.
I knew by the time I was 14 I didn’t want to have children. I don’t have anything against kids—I have an amazing goddaughter who has changed my life in so many ways and brings me joy every single day—I just never wanted to have children of my own. It took until I was in my 30s for people to stop telling me, “You’ll change your mind when the right man comes along” or “You’ll realize you want to be a mom someday.” I’ve never regretted my decision. I do have cats and they are like kids to me. Nose bumps and kitty cuddles are some of my favorite things.
I’m single. Does this bother me? Not in the least bit. My cup is overflowing with things that bring me joy and people that put a smile on my face. I’m not looking for anyone to complete me and I’m not interested in completing another person. At this point in life if I’m going to get in a relationship, the person needs to make my life better and make me want to be a better person. I like to joke that I’m married to my job and, in some ways, it’s the truth. (Another astrology thing … Mercury in Capricorn … holy career focus!)
I’m grateful for the circle of friends I have around me. I prefer quality over quantity, and my crew consists of some of the most amazing and genuine people I’ve ever known. You’ll hear about my people in here and may come to know some of them quite well. There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t thank the universe for putting all these people on paths that intersected with mine.
Fitness has become a huge piece of my life. In February 2019 I kicked my gym membership and got a Peloton cycle. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I hate working out in front of people, so having the bike at home, where I can use it whenever I want, has been so amazing. I’ve been lucky enough to find an instructor I adore (Cody) and a group of fellow riders who are kind and motivate me in all kinds of ways. I’m still new to my fitness journey but it’s been great to see the progress I’ve made in just a little over a year.
Last big factoid I’ll share — I’m a travel addict. I love seeing new places, eating the food, meeting the people, and immersing myself in the cultures of cities that aren’t my own. Some of my favorite places I’ve been to include Portland, Boston, Nashville, and Chicago. I have yet to venture outside of the US but, I’d like to spend some time in Europe in the future.
I love tattoos, Pinterest, random acts of kindness, and binge watching the Golden Girls. Cheesy reality TV (hello Jersey Shore and RHOA) is my guilty pleasure. I can’t drive to work unless I have my coffee and an uplifting podcast or good audiobook to enjoy. I sing at the top of my lungs when I think nobody is listening, am loyal to a fault, and when I love something or someone, I love with my entire soul. I’m perfectly imperfect and fully equipped with a fair share of flaws and quirks … But, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Welcome to this leg of my journey. I hope that in coming weeks and months you’ll find things here that inspire you and that you can relate to.
See you on the flip side.
